The IBMS Biomedical Scientist
of the Year award celebrates an
exceptional biomedical scientist
who has advanced practice in an innovative
and impactful way, making a real difference to
patients’ lives and inspiring those around them.
Nominations can be for yourself or a colleague.
Nominees must be a HCPC registered biomedical
scientist practising within the UK and show
evidence of:
• measurable achievements
• leadership and team working
• impact on patient care
We have been working with IBMS on this category
for 8 years now and we’re so grateful for their
support during this time. We have seen some
inspirational winners over the years including
Dr Sarah Pitt, new President of IBMS, who was
inaugurated earlier this month. Dr Pitt was the
winner of the Biomedical Scientist of the Year
Award in 2021, with judges praising her ability to
impart fact-checked, professional information
about COVID-19 on behalf of IBMS members for the
benefit of the public.
“The judges said that Sarah has a huge depth of
knowledge and experience in her specialist area of
virology, which she has been able to use to great
effect during the pandemic. Like many, Sarah
has been thrust into the media limelight and has
performed these interviews (often live and at short
notice) with considerable skill, all this while still
maintaining her ‘day job’ at the university. Thanks
to Sarah, much of the public now know who
biomedical scientists are and what they do in the
laboratory”
Dr Pitt follows Dr Joanna Andrews as the 37th
President of IBMS. We would like to thank Dr Andrews
for her support of the awards and wish her well for
the future.
It is a tremendous honour to serve as President of the IBMS at a time when the expertise
and impact of biomedical scientists have never been more vital to patient care.
Having been deeply involved in the profession for many years — and as a previous recipient of the
Biomedical Scientist of the Year award in 2021 — I know first-hand how powerful it is to have your
work recognised by your peers.
Awards like this not only celebrate individual excellence, but also shine a light on the skill,
dedication and innovation that define our profession. I am incredibly proud that the IBMS can
support and champion biomedical scientists whose work makes such a meaningful difference to
healthcare every day.
